Purpose
The aim is to ensure the regular use of chemicals used in all water-cooled cooling towers in the facility, the regular performance of the bleed-off process, and to record all these operations.
Definitions
- Tower No/Name: The number or name of the tower to be processed.
- Date: The date(s) when the operation(s) were performed. (In Day/Month/Year format, e.g., 05/03/2018)
- Corrosion-Scale Inhibitor Name: The name of the chemical added to the cooling tower water that prevents and/or slows corrosion and scale formation.
- Corrosion-Scale Inhibitor Amount: The amount of corrosion and scale preventing chemical added to the cooling tower water on that date.
- Biocide Name: The name of the microbe-killing chemical added to the cooling tower water that eliminates and/or limits microbiological activity in the water.
- Biocide Amount: The amount of biocide chemical added to the cooling tower water on that date.
- Other Chemical Name: The name of any other chemical, besides corrosion-scale inhibitor and biocide, that can be added to the cooling tower water.
- Other Chemical Amount: The amount of other chemical added to the cooling tower water on that date.
- Bleed-off: Daily opening of the cooling tower drain valve to discharge sediment and old water accumulated at the bottom, allowing fresh water to enter the cooling tower basin.
- Inspection: Weekly checks for excessive water leakage from the tower, algae, and scaling inside and outside the tower.
- Performed By: The person(s) who perform the operations and/or inspections.
Application
According to manufacturer recommendations and water conditioning company suggestions, chemicals must be regularly used in the circulating water inside cooling towers to protect human health and to prevent corrosion, aging, and wear of the cooling tower-chiller system.
For each water-cooled cooling tower in the facility, this form should be duplicated and the Tower No/Name section filled with the tower's name or number. In the record form, the Date column should contain the date the chemical(s) were added (e.g., 12/06/2018), and the adjacent cell should include the name of the corrosion-scale inhibitor chemical in the Name cell and its amount in the Amount cell.
If biocide was added on the same date, the Biocide Name and Biocide Amount cells should be filled with the chemical's name and amount. If chemicals were added on different dates, a new row should be used for each date, with the chemical name and amount entered in the relevant cells.
The bleed-off and inspection operations performed on the cooling tower are recorded by marking an X in the Bleed-off and Inspection cells corresponding to the date performed.
After each operation record, the person who added the chemicals and performed the bleed-off must sign in the Performed By cell corresponding to the date to complete the record.

Equipment Required for Operations
- Graduated container or dosing pump(s) for pouring chemicals into the cooling tower
Points to Consider
- Unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer or water conditioning company, chemicals used in cooling towers should be poured separately into the tower in separate containers and at different times. Mixing all chemicals in one container before pouring can cause dangerous results and may cause the chemicals to lose their effectiveness.
- Label information of chemicals used for cooling towers must be carefully observed, and all chemicals must be protected from sunlight. Chemicals exposed to sunlight may lose their effectiveness.
- Before use, the expiration date (E.D.) on the chemical labels must be checked. Chemicals past their expiration date or those that will expire before consumption should not be used.
- When manually pouring chemicals into cooling towers, it must be ensured that the chemical fully mixes with the water. Pouring over the drift eliminator or inside the overflow pipe while fans are running can cause chemicals to splash out or remain unmixed in one area, so full mixing is important.
- When working around the cooling tower, masks should be worn to minimize inhalation of droplets from the tower, and unnecessary time around the tower should be avoided.
