Ear Problems and Swimming Pools

To prevent the formation of Swimmer's Ear, it is necessary to check that the sanitary conditions of swimming pools are in place. The free chlorine and pH levels of swimming pools being within the values mentioned in regulations may not always be sufficient.

The most important factor affecting the healthiness of a swimming pool is the filtration system and filters. Well-functioning and adequately capacitated sand filters are like the heart of swimming pools. If there is a problem in the filters, various health problems including turbidity may occur.

In cases where swimmer's ear problems and various complaints increase, the following practices should be performed and checked:

  1. Empty the pool balance tank, perform mechanical cleaning, and then disinfect the walls with chlorinated water as if painting. Rinse the tank and put it into use.
  2. Brush and clean the hair catcher baskets and hair catchers of the pumps with water. After cleaning, disinfect with chlorinated water.
  3. Disinfect the sand inside the sand filters by letting chlorine act within.
  4. Clean the swimming pool overflows and grates. Ensure they are free from any algae or similar.
  5. As important as the internal cleaning of the pool, special attention should be paid to the cleanliness and hygiene of the pool edges and surroundings; pool edges should be wiped with disinfectant at least once a day, and bird droppings should be frequently cleaned and removed.
