What Is the Return of the Bedbug?

The bedbug (Cimex lectularius Linnaeus, 1758) is an ectoparasite. Bedbugs feed on the blood of humans and other warm-blooded hosts. They hide themselves in cracks and crevices, usually living around beds, headboards, and bed springs, vacuum cleaners, gloves, pipes, suitcases, electrical outlets, cracks, crevices, artificial flowers or decorative items, even behind picture frames, behind chairs, and in chair and sofa cushions. They can spread very quickly between rooms in accommodation facilities.

Why?

Primarily in the United States (due to mild winters) and some European countries, professional pest control companies have reported and notified a very intense presence of bedbug infestations within the last year. Especially in communal living areas (hotels, schools, apartment units, hospitals, campuses, office buildings, stores, cinemas, clothing stores, and even public transportation vehicles), infestations caused by bedbugs are frequently observed at high levels.

When?

All accommodation facilities opening for the new tourism season need to inspect the living areas mentioned above before opening. It is also important not to overlook this situation during accommodation.

  • Perform regular room and bed inspections and note any signs.
  • Examine sleeping areas (sofas, armchairs, etc.). Pay special attention to corners and bed seams.
  • Carry a small flashlight to assist you during these inspections.
  • Keep furniture replacement and arrangement under control.
  • Observe and maintain furniture in rooms that have been closed for a long time.
  • Store suspicious bags and suitcases in hotel rooms and luggage rooms inside a large plastic bag.
